"Malign Actor" breaches UK Defense Ministry Payroll.

Is this a shocking story?

No.

These types of breaches are becoming common place, and continuously highlighting the need for FOCUS on digital security. Municipalities and businesses alike NEED to take this threat seriously. The THREAT being the severe increase of cyber attacks in volume and sophistication in 2024.

Why is this attack worthy of note? Well, other than the target being high profile in nature the UK government has recently been embarrassed for posting a lead Cyber Security position with a salary of 57k/year. While we do not have time to get into the complexities of this choice and its repercussion's it does serve simply to highlight a disconnect in organizations between the internal perceived value of security, and the reality of the cost of breach.....

Do we know yet what this breach will cost the ministry? No. Will it be painful and disruptive for the real people affected? Yes.

At some point organizations are going to have to undergo a cultural shift. Cyber security is no longer a "nice to have" or a "maybe next year". Cyber security needs to happen NOW and at a ferocious pace.

Imagine being unwilling to "spend" on new sterilization technology while other facilities had already implemented and proven its value in patient care..... that's uncomfortable isn't it? The PHI/PII businesses are responsible for is critical, it is dangerous, and it needs to be taken seriously.

Harden the target, stay vigilant!
