60 Minutes outlines a disturbing alliance between young English speaking hackers and infamous Russian Ransomware gangs.

Key takeaway?

I have been thinking about this a lot over the past year. The news in every category is dark, depressing, unnerving...Every individual or group of people I interact with is, nervous. We may not be saying it out loud, or maybe you are, but people are anxious. What is going on in the world? What's next? While we could spend hours deep diving the implications and reasons behind the increase in baseline societal anxiety (which I believe is correctly oriented) that isn't really the point of a post on cyber security. However, admitting that this is how EVERYONE feels IS important, because criminals ARE ALSO SCARED. It is difficult to understand if you grew up in the west that stealing from people to survive is a legitimate vocation in a large statistical percentage of the "modern" world. If your JOB is stealing (via cyber crime) and you are nervous about feeding your family because the world seems to be losing its collective mind then guess what, you find yourself EXTREMELY motivated to succeed.

Remember this folks, if you are nervous, so are others, and "others" includes people willing to attack your business and family to provide for theirs.
