Anne Arundel County Government Hit by Cyberattack – A Wake-Up Call for All Organizations
Anne Arundel County government services have been disrupted due to an ongoing cyber incident of external origin. While 911 and emergency services remain operational, many public-facing services are unavailable.
What Happened?
Reports suggest that the INC ransomware group may be responsible. This group, active since July 2023, is known for double extortion tactics—encrypting systems and threatening to leak stolen data unless a ransom is paid. Their typical entry points? Phishing emails and compromised credentials bought on the dark web.
This isn't the first cyber incident for Anne Arundel County. In 2017, a phishing attack on public schools led to a $57,000 payroll theft. More recently, in October 2024, the Maryland National Guard was called in to strengthen school cybersecurity.
The Bigger Picture
The Department of Homeland Security has long warned that government and emergency services are prime cyberattack targets. Ransomware can cripple essential services and pose serious risks to public safety.
How to Protect Your Organization
This incident is a stark reminder for all businesses and public institutions to strengthen their cybersecurity posture:
✅ Regularly update and patch systems – Outdated software is a hacker’s best friend.
✅ Conduct frequent cybersecurity training – Employees should recognize phishing attacks.
✅ Implement multi-factor authentication (MFA) – A simple yet effective barrier.
✅ Back up critical data – Regular, offline backups can be a lifesaver.
✅ Have a response plan – Know who to call and what steps to take if an attack happens.
Cyberattacks aren’t a matter of if, but when. The time to prepare is now.
