Millions of student and teacher identities compromised in breach of K-12 administrative software provider Powerschool.

This article from BleepingComputer details what is currently known about a major data breach at the aforementioned company. There is more detail available now than initially about who was impacted. There has still been no specific impact disclosure by Powerschool which has frustrated parents and administrators. Powerschool at this point is continuing to iterate there need to investigate and mitigate additional fallout.

Obviously this is not the first instance of data being stolen that I have posted about in even recent months. I wanted to issue some simple warnings though for those who may be interested.

The combination of several major breaches within recent history (ChangeHealthCare, National Public Data) along with smaller yet targeted breaches like the one we are discussing today create an environment absolutely primed for identity theft. If your credit is not already frozen, freeze it. If your children's credit is not frozen, freeze it. I am linking to the Experian "How To" page on freezing your credit at each bureau because I think it does a good job outlining details. Please take this seriously and put forth the minimal effort to prevent a disaster.
