AWS was down.
Yes, by now you have read dozens (or several) stories regarding this outage and it may seem gratuitous to write one more.
But, here I go anyway.
I LOVE outages.
Why?
It is simple. Outages remind us how fragile our modern world is, how easily almost all modern convenience can be stripped away in the blink of an eye. However, they also remind us how resilient we are, how talented, flexible, and brilliant our teams are.
No access to THE software today (insert whatever) OK, how do we continue to succeed, process orders, take care of clients, move data, make coffee!?!?
I LOVE outages because they remind me each and every time that we are not hopelessly tied to the tech we so adore. We are still hard working, creative, collaborative humans. We can still make it through our day with no apps, no GPS, no social media, no streaming, no shopping no......whatever.
We are still us.
I think that is good.
Lets be honest, those servers up at AWS probably needed the break anyway. Let them rest for 12 hours. We are fine without them.
If that version of reality is not your cup of tea then try this one on for size.
Outages are a great time to identify weaknesses in your teams, your systems, and your process. Use those tough moments to grow, to review and to adapt for the future. No one (anything) should bring you and your organization to its knees. Use those tough days to sharpen your skills and build a stronger game plan.
There you go, there is my take.
You're welcome.
