Last week I posted an article that detailed a breach of Medicare enrollee data and I iterated that I had a few stories related to our seniors that would be forthcoming.
The snapshot below is an example I pulled of a new and disheartening scam that appears to utilize generative AI and social media platforms to target the elderly.
The scam uses the chat feature on several social media platforms and preys on elderly users. The grift is pretending to be a celebrity and chatting with the end user endlessly and eventually asking them for help, usually in the form of gift cards, cash transfers or wires.
The targeting of senior citizens who may have a higher probability of loneliness and leveraging their humanity against them is gross, period.
Please be aware of scams like this that are very prevalent at the moment. Speak with family and loved ones and educate them on the dangers and criminals who are targeting them.
I have had two personal conversations in less than a week from two different states regarding this exact tactic.
